Kasing Lung created the Labubu character in 2015 as part of his ‘The Monsters’ storybook universe. Rather humble beginnings for a character that would garner a huge following in the years to follow. A cute, fluffy creature with a devilish smile, with fangs that add just enough raw edge to make it appeal to both adults and kids alike.
Labubus had been around for quite some time: Kasing initially partnered with ‘POP MART’, (one of the largest blind box IP businesses) in 2019 to get his character out to the public as a collectible. It was incredibly popular, but never made its way out of the niche collectible/hypebeast circles during this time.
Mid-2024 was a good time for Labubus to make their breakout. Collector rush was in full swing thanks to the popularity of Pokemon cards, and it took blind boxes along for the ride. KAWS, Bearbricks, and Murakami were overstaying their welcome; the western market was longing for something fresh.
In early 2025, the cauldron of circumstance was bubbling. Labubus were adopted swiftly by a younger audience thanks to their affordability and availability.
A few months on, its seems that Labubu was a flash in the pan. Prices are falling, and sightings are far less frequent. I’m somewhat optimistic we will see them rise again.
